The Portrait of Britain prize, hosted by the British Journal of Photography, has been a transformative milestone in my career as a portrait photographer. Winning this prestigious award four times and being shortlisted twice has significantly elevated my profile in the industry, opening doors to new opportunities and bringing my work to a wider audience.
As the golden hour casts a gentle glow over the city, I sit, enveloped in the warmth of an incredible announcement: my portrait of the extraordinarily talented Michael James Shaw has been shortlisted as a finalist in the prestigious Hasselblad Masters 2023 competition. Amidst a vast sea of 85,000 submissions, to be selected among the top 10 in the portrait category is an honor that leaves me both humbled and elated.
Rory Lewis is very pleased to announce his Portrait of Bill Speakman VC has been Shortlisted The British Photography Awards. The BPA run an open, responsible competition aimed at celebrating photographic talent from all British and British-based photographers.

Bill Speakman was born and brought up in Altrincham, Cheshire and educated at Wellington school. He was 24 years old and a private in the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment), British Army, attached to the 1st Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers during the Korean War when the following deed took place at United Hill, for which he was awarded the VC.

The first female combat officer and tank commander in British History. The historic move comes after a long-standing ban on women serving on the frontline was lifted by the PM in July 2018.
