Stephen accepted my invitation to sit for a portrait at the London Studio. I’ve admired his work for many years. Graham is not only a screen icon, but a fellow scouser.
It’s not unusual for photographers to be inspired by other types of art. As you may have noticed there is a great deal of Renaissance Italian influence in my portraiture.
Recently I was commissioned by Curtis Brown Management to capture a series of promotional portraiture for Karl Pilkington. Lisa Pescia is a 25 year veteran stage and screen actor, known for such shows as Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Mentalist. Arranging a session at the West Hollywood Studio, Lisa has been a fan of my style of Actors Headshots and Portraits for quite some time.
Actor James Purefoy is a remarkable stage and screen presence. From jousting Heath Ledger in 2001’s pulpy A Knight’s Tale to manipulating a cult of serial killers in Fox’s The Following, James has appeared in a wider range of film, television and theatre productions than the lion’s share of his contemporaries.
During my trip to LA in October 2018, I contacted Armin to arrange a second portrait sitting. Ciarán was very kind to accept my invitation to sit for a portrait in March of this year. The sitting was very memorable, Hinds was astonishing, creating expressions and emotions that almost hold the viewer. My directional inspiration for the sitting flowed from three themes. The first to capture Ciarán as a penitent man, who believes, the second, a focused individual, the third a man who doubts. Hinds created complex and vigorous characters were embodied by energy and animation.
William Shatner is best known for his role as Captain James T Kirk on the Starship Enterprise. I’ve had the honour and pleasure of having him in front of my lens on two occasions. In total my time spent photographing him has equated to 15 minutes. 15 minutes with Bill.
Renaissance portraiture and the use of chiaroscuro by the masters has been of immense inspiration to my photographic style. For those unfamiliar, chiaroscuro is an oil painting technique, developed during the Renaissance.
Actress Natalie Dormer, star of Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games and The Tudors. Sat for a portrait at the London Studio several weeks ago. I wrote to Natalie inviting her to sit for my Expressive Portraits Project just over a year ago; it just goes to show how many letters and requests she receives. Natalie is exceptionally talented with an incredible natural beauty.

My Expressive Portraits Exhibition is enabling me to seek out opportunities to undertake Portrait Sittings with some impressive stars of stage, screen and TV. This has necessitated a fair amount of hopping back and forth across the Atlantic as I aim to bring a depth to the exhibition that would not be possible by staying on English turf only. I first wrote to impressive Director and compelling Actor, Andrew J Robinson, hoping to include him in a Los Angeles trip last September.
As luck would have it while on assignment in Los Angeles Actor Mark Margolis, and his wife Actress Jacqueline Margolis where staying in the same Studio City hotel. I recognised Mark in the lobby having a sneaky cigarette, and introduced myself, he was very approachable and chatty. Mark has starred in dozens & dozens of films, from 1492 to Hannibal, The Wrestler and of course Scarface.

I had assumed that only sheer luck or destiny would place Sir Patrick Stewart in front of my lens. Somewhat surprisingly though, after 24 years of dreaming about capturing his portrait, it was the sight of a vulgar, pink Hummer that inspired our meeting. The sitting would change my stars from a provincial photographer to an international portraitist working in London & Los Angeles.
