In the world of portrait photography, capturing theessence of power, authority, and historical significance is an art form that goes beyond mere documentation. As a seasoned portrait photographer, my lens has had the privilege of framing the faces of influential political figures, ranging from royalty to prime ministers, mayors, and religious leaders. In this blog post, I'll delve into some notable experiences, drawing inspiration from Renaissance art and sharing the stories behind the lens.
My latest subject, Ambassador to India & former 42nd Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, took center stage in my LA studio. The inspiration behind this portrait lies in my profound admiration for the works of Hans Holbein the Younger, a Tudor Portrait Artist of the Renaissance period. Holbein's ability to freeze his subjects in time, capturing their authority and personality, has become a guiding light in my own portraiture journey.
Holbein's influence is evident in the solemn yet powerful expressions found in his works, such as the iconic portrait of Sir Thomas More. Detail is paramount for Holbein, who believed in portraying true likeness without the airbrushing of imperfections. In my portrait of Ambassador Eric Garcetti, I aimed to embrace this philosophy, capturing the true essence of the man with authenticity and imperfections intact.
Former Prime Minister Theresa May's book cover became a canvas for me to depict the essence of power and reflection. In collaboration with one of Britain's prominent political figures, I sought to capture May's contemplative expressions, reflecting on her experiences and advocating for positive change in her upcoming book, "The Abuse of Power."
Inviting former Prime Minister Tony Blair to sit for a portrait in London was an exciting prospect. Researching his profile and delving into the complexities of his political career, I aimed to capture Blair's contemplative statesmanship, reflecting on the challenges faced during his tenure.
A Portrait Amid Uncertainty: The Brexit era posed challenges for former Prime Minister David Cameron. Drawing inspiration from the meditative states portrayed by Sir James Guthrie during the First World War, I sought to capture Cameron in a contemplative light, reflecting on the uncertain times that marked his political legacy.
Mayor of Glendale: Mayor Ardashes "Ardy" Kassakhian's portrait session at Glendale City Hall was a memorable experience. Symbolizing the "Jewel City" of California, Kassakhian's journey in public service was reflected in the portraits, capturing his dedication to Glendale's growth and prosperity.
Inviting Mr Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyleto sit at Parliament a few weeks ago, the portraits will form the basis of a new project the details of which will be revealed soon! Throughout my career, I have been commissioned to photograph a great deal of Political Portraiture. From local councillors to MP’s, Members of the House of Lords and even Prime Ministers. On this occasion for the first time, I was able to capture portraits inside the historic House of Commons Chamber.
A Chiaroscuro Depiction: Inspired by Renaissance portraits, I had the honor of capturing Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the highest-ranking member of the Catholic Church in England & Wales. The session, infused with discussions on Renaissance art, aimed to create a Chiaroscuro depiction of the cardinal.
Commanding the Household Division: Commanding the Household Division of the British Army, Major General Chris Ghika CBE's portrait session showcased his seniority and responsibility in the military. From his role as deputy commander of the US-led military coalition against ISIS to overseeing ceremonial occasions, Ghika's portraits encapsulate his distinguished career.
As a portrait photographer, each session is a unique journey into the lives and legacies of influential figures. Drawing inspiration from Renaissance art, I aim to capture the timeless essence of power, reflection, and historical significance in every portrait. From political leaders to religious figures, my lens tells the stories that shape our understanding of the world.
