Capturing History and Tradition: Rory Lewis Photographs The Royal Lancers
RORY LEWIS
As a photographer deeply passionate about capturing the essence of history and tradition through portraiture, my recent collaboration with The Royal Lancers (Queen Elizabeth's Own) was an incredibly inspiring journey. Immersed in the rich heritage and timeless values of this esteemed regiment, I embarked on a mission to create evocative table scenes that would pay homage to their legacy.
Drawing inspiration from the works of artistic masters such as Holbein, Caravaggio, and Sir Thomas Lawrence, I sought to infuse each portrait with a profound sense of reverence and nobility. Guided by their techniques and visual storytelling, I aimed to encapsulate the spirit of The Royal Lancers, honoring their unwavering commitment to duty and honor.
In selecting my equipment, I meticulously chose three Profoto A2 lights to craft the perfect ambiance for the portraits. Against the backdrop of Manfrotto Tobacco and Olive, I carefully utilized two OCF softboxes and one translucent umbrella to add depth and dimension to each composition. This deliberate arrangement of lighting elements allowed me to enhance the visual narrative of camaraderie and heritage that defines The Royal Lancers, ensuring that each portrait resonated with authenticity and emotion.
Approaching this collaboration as a military portraitist dedicated to preserving history through photography, I felt a profound sense of responsibility to capture the pride, professionalism, and dedication of these brave men and women who serve King and country with unwavering resolve. Each portrait served as a testament to their valor, immortalizing their legacy for generations to come.
For me, this opportunity to document The Royal Lancers was not just a professional endeavor, but a deeply personal and meaningful experience. Through my lens, I honored the timeless tradition and valor of the regiment, creating portraits that serve as enduring tributes to their bravery and sacrifice.
