A Fresh Take: Capturing Actor Andy Lee at Rory Lewis’s New York Studio
RORY LEWIS
Last week, I had the privilege of photographing actor Andy Lee at my New York studio. Known for his remarkable range on both stage and screen, Andy was looking for headshots that could effectively showcase his versatility. Whether portraying deep, dramatic characters or lighter, more approachable roles, his aim was to create images that would resonate with casting directors and capture his dynamic presence.
As with all my sessions, the goal was to capture the unique qualities that define Andy’s talent. I tailored the shoot to reflect his personality and the roles he’s pursuing, ensuring that each shot was imbued with authenticity and character. My approach to headshots goes beyond simply capturing an image—I aim to reveal the layers that make each actor compelling on screen.
Working with Andy was a smooth and enjoyable experience. From the moment he stepped into the studio, we worked collaboratively to achieve a wide range of expressions and moods. Whether focusing on a serious, contemplative look or highlighting a more laid-back, charismatic side, Andy's professionalism and natural ability in front of the camera made every shot count.
A relaxed and comfortable atmosphere is key to capturing the best headshots, and I always ensure that my studio provides this. With ample space for wardrobe changes, a dedicated styling area, and personalized direction, every actor can feel at ease during the session. For Andy’s shoot, we discussed his vision, character types, and how he wanted to be represented. Together, we crafted a session that felt tailored to his needs, from wardrobe selection to pose direction.
Once the session wrapped up, Andy reviewed the unedited contact sheet of images and selected his favorites for retouching. I take great care in providing subtle, professional retouching that enhances, rather than alters, an actor’s natural look—focusing on maintaining realism while ensuring the final images are polished and camera-ready.
Actors like Andy Lee understand the importance of headshots that stand out. In a competitive industry, headshots are often the first impression a casting director has, and they need to convey not just a look, but a story. My aim as a headshot photographer is to help actors like Andy present their true selves, offering casting professionals a glimpse into the depth and range of their talents.
